Bishop Albert Jamison is no stranger at all to the gospel music community. His work and accomplishments tell the entire story of a young Brooklyn boy, being influenced by the giants of his community, went from becoming a local hero as a recording artist to becoming later on an important torchbearer for generations of gospel followers being the chairman of the Gospel Music Workshop of America - the largest gospel music organization in the world.
Today, after three decades of serving as pastor of Brooklyn’s Pleasant Grove Tabernacle and more than a decade removed from recording an entire album under his own namesake, Jamison along with the New York Mass Choir are moving forward in a mighty way with their latest musical offering Show Yourself Mighty; released on Light Records. Jamison was able to bring some of New York’s finest songwriters, producers, songwriters and singers to the project including GRAMMY-award winner Hezekiah Walker, Rev. Timothy Wright, Lucinda Moore, Kervy Brown, Jules Bartholomew, David Caton, David Frazier and Shaun Brown. Also joining the album’s festivities are gospel giants John P. Kee, Nikki Ross and Bishop Paul S. Morton.
It’s been a long time since Rev. James Cleveland gave Jamison his big break with the Tri-boro Mass Choir on the beloved, GRAMMY-nominated In God’s Own Time, My Change Will Come in 1979. But the blessed protege’ of Cleveland’s renowned workshop has turned full circle and is continuing the rich legacy of the late popular gospel figure with a tremendous passion for growth, change and a commanding spirit of excellence.
PRAYZEHYMNOnline.com was fortunate to speak with the 30-year GMWA forebear about his latest recording, his lucrative heritage, his musical influences and to discuss some of the newest projects and ventures within the Gospel Music Workshop of America. We are proud to finally share that interview with you in its entirety.
