Niyoki (pronounced Nie-oh-kee) is truly one of the most popular independent gospel artists today. With the recent success of her debut project, My Everything, on the D2G music label, she is taking the gospel music community by storm and catching lots of attention on gospel and urban radio. My Everything has sold 15,000 copies since its release in 2006 - landing at number thirty-two on Billboard's Gospel charts - and the lead track, "He's Here," was named the 27th most-played gospel song of 2007 by the trade publication R&R (Radio and Records. Accompanying that single was the major concept video produced by industry pro Dale Resteghini; whom has worked on videos for hip-hop icons including Cam'ron, Jim Jones, Birdman, Unk, Ja Rule, and Soulja Boy.
Now with her sophomore collection, Rest, landing on the shelves this year, Niyoki is certain to make an indelible impression with fans of gospel music and bring new ones into the fold. PRAYZEHYMNOnline.com was blessed with the opportunity to speak with Niyoki about her new CD, her colorful background working for Prince, her newborn baby and her survival tips being an independent gospel artist.
Song clips played during the interview include: "All That I Have," "Joy," "Where Would I Be," and "I Will Rest."
