::ALBUM REVIEW:: The amount of brilliance captured on this explosive disc literally proves why the Clark Sisters should be remembered as contemporary icons. Their influence has paved the way for female leading groups including Witness, the Anointed Pace Sisters and even R&B groups such as Xscape and EnVogue. Most of their individual signature moves, along with their colorful blend of harmonies, are showcased with divine affection on "Is My Living In Vain" (1979). And what set this record apart from most of their other releases is the production's raw texture and the amazing number of treasured selections showcased. The title cut sticks out with layers of vocal greatness and colorful mode changes that work just right with the reflective lyrics. The Clark Sisters ask several, mind-blowing questions: "Is my labor in vain/Can the clock be rewind/Have I let my light shine/Have I made 99 (taking from the old saying 99 1/2 and half won't do)". And they respond: "No/of course not/for up the road is eternal gain". The group then takes individual turns with soulful, emotive solo parts and rejoices together in harmony: "No". The experience is lifted to a higher level with funky, organ blasts from Elbertina "Twinkie" Clark, beautiful piano swirls and a few harmonic aerobics. The group blends traditional gospel sounds with innovative soul and luscious harmony effects throughout the entire collection; creating a slew of valuable compositions. Way before Tobias Fox's "Shabach" became a staple in urban churches, "Ha-Ya (Eternal Life)" gave us clear insight on the Hebrew language with a taste of Stevie Wonder-funk. You can even hear the smiliar bass walk on the chorus found in "Shabach". "Pure Gold" is also an interesting track with its thrilling movements, tasteful lyrical interpretation of the Scriptures. When the vamp finally rocks in, Karen Clark and Dorinda Clark play tagteam and storms out some commanding gospel belting. "They Were Overcome (By The Word)" features the legendary Dr. Mattie Moss Clark on lead while the Clark Sisters provide delicate background vocals. "Speak Lord", one of the album's strongest ballads, reveals a youthful Karen Clark in front delivering passionate exhortations while the moving instrumentation, along with the early 80s strings additions, adds a piercing flavor to the melody. The album closes out with the zesty "Expect Your Miracle". The catchy, fun melody is obviously the most memorable trait captured here, while the Clark Sisters continue to demonstrate their lovely, clear harmonies. Mostly all of the cuts were penned by Twinkie Clark - which showcases another plus for this sensational group of singers. The talent, the vocals, the songs and a big piece of the musicianship (with Twinkie Clark playing the Hammond organ) are provided by the artist. This recording's heartbeat is strongly provided by the Clark Sisters and because there is so much heart and passion captured here, even in the songs themselves, it is no surprise to know this album is still being remembered for being one of gospel's most significant collections ever created.
