::ALBUM REVIEW:: Probably an overlooked musical affair to most critics, "I'm Going Through" (1991) is seasoned with traditional delicacies, infectious singing and powerhouse tracks that shows no sign of deterioration. Rev. Clay Evans had released several successful projects, led by Savoy Records' president Rev. Milton Biggham, in the past with the Fellowship Choir (of the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church of Chicago), but none of his projects bear the enjoyable thrill and satisfaction like this one. From start to finish, Rev. Evans and an amazing crew of talented singers, musicians and songwriters showcase a brilliant presentation of songs immersed in the tradition of eclectic Chicago gospel. Opening the album is Biggham's "I'm Going Through" - which is dipped in a traditional rocking-hand-clapping batter that best suits Evans' style of music. LaShun Pace delivers a heartfelt solo on "Lord Make Me Right". Clearly the strongest constructed ballad, this song reveals Pace at her best vocally and reveals a commanding delivery on top of the powerful lyrics. Rev. Charles Nicks' "Something About God's Grace" gets a churchified facelift with Loretta Oliver pouring out great emotion on her solo, the band striking impressive licks and the AARC Mass Choir blasting zesty, robust harmonies. Towards the end of the song, after the vamp, it is a director's dream as Nicks' old classic gets bent into a Sunday morning charismatic sensation. Heavy breaks and impromptu directions gives this song a stellar playback favor. "All My Help", "Hallelujah Anyhow" (featuring the late Elder James Lenox) and "Use Me Lord" (with its series of modulations and simple melody) are also prized traditional favorites, while Stephen "Puff" Jones delivers a joyous lead on "Wonder Working Power". Of course, Evans is not too far from the scene with his revisit to one of his most popular staples, "Room At The Cross/At The Cross". The nice medley features gorgeous synth work and leaves a classic sound that feels fresh and lively. "Bring It To Jesus" is a simple, slow number that opens with a sweet sermonette from Evans, with Rev. Milton Biggham jumping in with a supporting lead role. This was the first of recordings from the African American Religious Connection Mass Choir and its success had not been duplicated until Evans' dropped the surprising "I've Got A Testimony" project in 1996. But "I'm Going Through" bears all of the ingredients for an unforgettable traditional worship experience and it defines the rich traditions of Rev. Clay Evans and the Chicago sound on each track. It's a live recording with an incredible production from Biggham and Michael Shaw, great instrumentation, rapturous vocals and memorable tracks. Fans of Rev. Clay Evans or the churchy sounds of Chicago have no excuse whatsoever to forsake owning a copy of this project.
