::ALBUM REVIEW::

Mostly known for working with a number of artists and institutions including Dr. Margaret P. Douroux, Richard Smallwood and the Gospel Music Workshop of America and developing an extensive resume' which includes editing the best-selling African American Heritage Hymnal, Nolan Williams, Jr. has become an accomplished songwriter and a respected musician amongst his peers and those who know him. It should come to no surprise to discover Williams' aspirations to record his music unto disc. That opportunity has finally come with the release of the independent-supported "inSpiration"; a bold project containing new material mostly written or arranged by Williams and features a lengthy list of guest appearances from big names and upcoming talent. And with the neat additions of the Nashville String Machine providing some gorgeous string arrangements on some of the cuts and excellent production being forged in the studio by Williams and accomplished musician John Stoddart, "inSpiration" is a victorious step of musical success for the DC native.

The project is flooded with songs and most of the triumphant cuts are scattered out across the twenty-one chapters. Wondrously opening up the collection is the rousing, uptempo dance-oriented "We Bless Your Name". The cut is praise-and-worship friendly and features spirited exhortations from Williams. The joyous vocals and rousing vamp featuring ad-libs from Vanessa Williams (of Richard Smallwood's Vision) are a delicate addition to the mix. "Generational Blessing" features a laidback groove soaked in contemporary affection and a stunning horn section including legendary players including Vinnie Ciesielski, Doug Moffett and Steve Patrick. The lyrics dig into familiar territory set by Donald Lawrence on "The Blessings of Abraham" but recalls a deeper revelation from God's Word proclaiming God's promise of abundant blessing on His children. Churchy traditional gospel along with a down-home bluesy drive is captured on "Becoming The Kingdom" and is aided by infectious vocals from Byron Nichols. The song takes on a different character towards the vamp and is highly animated with blazing background vocals and brass highlights.

There's even several lovely, relaxing cuts offered here - certain to create the right transition in between songs. "Take It To The Lord In Prayer", along with the gorgeous violin duet opener, leads the pack of ballads with its sensitive piano-only accompaniment and a lovely rendition of the classic hymn. "Rachel's Song" possess a strong melody, encouraging lyrics and a moving solo from John Stoddard - and after hearing the gorgeous flow of the string and horn movements, you are bound to agree on how authentic the song actually sounds. Former American Idol contestant Anwar Robinson delivers a passionate testimony on "God Made An Exception"; revealing the quality of richness and purity of his vocals. Renowned R&B vocalist Regina Belle guests on "My Offering"; a song that blends a few musical glimpses of the Staple Singers' "Let's Do It Again" with its thick contempo-blues guitar layers, sweet horn foundations and Belle's smoky vocals. "Pastor And People" is the culminating masterpiece of balladic activity featured and is wondrously set in the spirit of a Disney motion picture theme song. It has that light pop/adult contemporary elegance and delivers another lyrical delight motioned by a powerful duet by Vanessa Williams and Jason Powell.

But there are a few obstacles to face throughout the disc. Besides the lengthy number of tracks and the plentiful list of interludes and spoken word segments, there is one track that is totally overdone and overworked. "NEWpraise (this is the day)" feels rushed with its speedy tempo in the beginning, but takes a turn for the worst on the vamp with its outrageous choral framework. Vocals are just everywhere and the band rivals with their deliveries. Another downfall can be found in how slow the project actually flows since it is highly dominated by slow numbers. Besides those issues, "inSpiration" has a lot of potential and is packaged well. So well that it would be difficult to say anything that opposes that notion. From the album's linear notes (featuring wonderful colors and layouts) to the quality of production captured on the actual songs, Nolan Williams has stepped his best foot forward to reveal a creative portrait of music along with a spirit of excellence that will certainly bless fans of Richard Smallwood or Donald Lawrence. While the sounds of his influences are highly noticeable, it should be noted that Williams still delivers a fashionable collection of soulful melodies on "inSpiration" that helps to create an unique aura for his gifts and talent.
